Jet Card And Fractional Ownership Clients Change The Way They Charter

PR Log (Press Release) – Dec 18, 2009 – Air Charter Service has seen a flood of ex-Jet Card and fractional ownership clients coming to them in the last 12 months for ad-hoc charters. The company’s London office’s executive jet department has seen a significant increase in business, especially in October and November where the amount of flights was almost double that of figures for the corresponding months in 2008.
Joel Fenn, Executive Charter Director, added: “Business people still need to save time, and therefore money, by chartering aircraft – they are just looking at different possibilities in these troubled economic times. As many of these clients have only ever chartered using Jet Cards or fractional ownership, this is the first time they have realised that not only is ad-hoc charter more flexible, but it can also be more cost effective. We therefore feel that the Jet Card fad may be on its way out even when the economy starts to recover.”
Fenn continued: “We already had a large client base, but it has grown significantly this year. The reasons our clients are giving for moving away from Jet Cards or fractional ownership include the lack of flexibility, only one size of aircraft, the hidden post flight costs and the large up front payments required to purchase them.”
Explaining why people originally purchased Jet Cards, Managing Director Tony Bauckham commented: “People were initially drawn in by the easily accountable hourly rates. This made costs black and white for business people and their accounts departments. These fixed rates, however, are often set higher than actual prices so that they cover all eventualities for the airline or broker offering them. It was only when companies looked into all costs closer, due to the economic downturn, that this was realised. Ad-hoc chartering allows far greater flexibility, and is based on current, actual rates.”
Another worry for customers is that if a Jet Card company were to become insolvent, they would take all their clients’ large prepayments with them. There has been one well publicised case of a big Jet Card company going out of business earlier this year, and there have also been a few other smaller competitors to ACS that have suffered the same fate. These clients still require chartered flights, but after bad experiences with such schemes they have been coming to ACS for ad-hoc charters.
Justin Bowman, Group Commercial Director, added: “Everything we have been reading in the press about the private jet industry has been doom and gloom as many of the publicly listed private jet companies are experiencing losses. However most of these companies rely mainly on selling Jet Card schemes. In my opinion their losses seem to be reflecting people’s changing spending habits, rather than the failure of the industry to recover.”

Polish State Railways PKP equip train conductors with HAFAS Mobile Professional

In November, the TK Telekom, a subsidiary of Polish State Railways PKP, completed the installation process of HAFAS Mobile Professional by HaCon on behalf of PKP Intercity. In speed trains a total of 400 mobile train conductor devices „Casio IT-3100” are now in operation.
What is special is that the device can be operated easily via the hardware keyboard as well as via touch screen with stylus. The operation via stylus on a touch screen, which is somewhat more complicated than using the hardware keyboard of the device without a stylus, has a special charm for the Polish train conductors: They can type in Polish characters directly on the soft keyboard implemented by HaCon, instead of being restricted to only Latin characters in conjunction with a fault-tolerant search in order to select Polish station names.
Using a button train conductors can switch from HAFAS Mobile Professional to a point of sale software for the ticketing of PKP Informatics. In this way, employees can directly print train tickets on board – the HAFAS timetable application simply keeps running in the background.

HAFAS Mobile Professional is used on mobile devices running Windows CE / Windows Mobile. Volkswagen Golf R May Be Coming to U.S.

General Motors Fritz Henderson To Deliver Keynote Address at NAFA's 2010 I&E

PRLog (Press Release) – Sep 30, 2009 – NAFA Fleet Management Association is proud to announce that Frederick (Fritz) Henderson, President and Chief Executive Officer of General Motors, will kick off NAFA's 2010 Institute & Expo by delivering a keynote address on Sunday, April 25, in Detroit, Michigan.  The I&E is NAFA's annual meeting, bringing together more than 2,000 fleet industry professionals for four days of education, trade show experience, and networking.  Henderson's keynote address is expected to discuss the future of GM and the role that fleets will play in the automotive industry the next five years.
Henderson was elected GM President and Chief Executive Officer in March 2009.  He started his career at General Motors in 1984 as a Senior Analyst and was promoted to several positions of increasing responsibility until becoming GMAC Group Vice President of Finance in Detroit in 1992.  He went on to serve as President of GM Latin America, Africa, and Middle East; President of GM Asia Pacific; and Chairman of GM Europe.  Prior to his current position, Henderson had been GM President and Chief Operating Officer since March 2008 and was Vice Chairman and Chief Financial Officer from January 2006 to March 2008. Henderson is a native of Detroit.

PRLog (Press Release) – Sep 30, 2009 – Dozens of lives could be saved and hundreds of accidents avoided in the UK each year for just 20p according to TyreSafe as it launches October’s Tyre Safety Month. Throughout the month hundreds of garages across the country will be encouraging motorists to check the depth of their tyre tread by using a 20p coin, to ensure they stay safe and legal.
“As we move into the wettest months of the year, adequate tyre tread depth is a critical element of road safety,” explains Stuart Jackson, chairman, TyreSafe. “There are still far too many accidents and fatalities occurring every day which could have been avoided if the driver had paid more attention to the condition of their tyres. The ‘lifesaver in your pocket’ campaign gives drivers an incredibly easy and simple way to check their tread depth which will help them stay safe and on the right side of the law.”
During 2008, 34 motorists died on the UK’s roads where an illegal, defective or under-inflated tyre was a contributory factor in the accident. At least 900 other motorists were also injured in accidents where tyre neglect played a part. Independent research commissioned by TyreSafe found that more than half of all drivers could not correctly identify the legal tread depth and a startling one in five drivers had never checked their tread depth. The AA reported that in 2008 nearly one in ten of every breakdown it attends, is for a tyre related call out.
Current UK law states that tyre tread on cars must be at a minimum of 1.6mm across the central three quarters of the tread, around its entire circumference. Drivers found in breach of this law face a fine of up to £2500 and three penalty points for each illegal tyre.
The ‘lifesaver in your pocket’ campaign encourages drivers to insert a 20p coin into the main grooves of the tyre to check the tread depth. If the outer band of the coin is visible when inserted, then the tyre may not have sufficient depth and should be checked by a qualified specialist.
Adequate tread depth is critical to safe motoring. The tread grooves are carefully designed to remove water from the road surface and keep the tyre in contact with the road. If the tread grooves are not deep enough, water cannot be moved resulting in a loss of grip and traction which can lead to longer stopping distances, reduced handling and an increased likelihood of aquaplaning. More than a quarter of drivers surveyed by TyreSafe were unaware that they were more likely to suffer from aquaplaning with low tread and one in five drivers were unaware that they would take longer to stop in the wet or would not be able to go round corners as well.
“The level of ignorance about tread depth is quite worrying,” adds Jackson. “Tyres are the only part of the vehicle in contact with the road surface so it is essential that they are in a condition that allows them to perform properly. If people do not look after them properly, not only do they risk incurring fines and penalty points, but they also greatly increase their likelihood of being involved in a serious accident.”

Top Tips for checking tyre tread depths
1. Ideally, tyre tread depth should be checked at least once a month at the same time that you check your tyre pressure.
2. If you do not have a calibrated tread depth gauge a 20p coin provides a useful guide.
3. Insert the 20p coin into the main tyre grooves at several places around the circumference of the tyre and across its width.
4. If the outer band of the 20p coin is visible whenever you check the tread, your tread depth may be illegal and you should have them checked by a qualified tyre specialist.
5. When checking your tread depth, give the rest of the tyres a visual inspection for any cuts or bulges and remove any stones or objects embedded in the tread.
