Sep 30, 2009 – NAFA Fleet Management Association is proud to announce that Frederick (Fritz) Henderson, President and Chief Executive Officer of General Motors, will kick off NAFA's 2010 Institute & Expo by delivering a keynote address on Sunday, April 25, in Detroit, Michigan. The I&E is NAFA's annual meeting, bringing together more than 2,000 fleet industry professionals for four days of education, trade show experience, and networking. Henderson's keynote address is expected to discuss the future of GM and the role that fleets will play in the automotive industry the next five years.
Henderson was elected GM President and Chief Executive Officer in March 2009. He started his career at General Motors in 1984 as a Senior Analyst and was promoted to several positions of increasing responsibility until becoming GMAC Group Vice President of Finance in Detroit in 1992. He went on to serve as President of GM Latin America, Africa, and Middle East; President of GM Asia Pacific; and Chairman of GM Europe. Prior to his current position, Henderson had been GM President and Chief Operating Officer since March 2008 and was Vice Chairman and Chief Financial Officer from January 2006 to March 2008. Henderson is a native of Detroit.
The 2010 Institute & Expo coincides with the rebirth of the American car industry. Since many within NAFA's Membership source the majority of their vehicles from the Detroit Three (GM, Chrysler, and Ford), and primarily General Motors, the Association is very excited to have Henderson speak at I&E.

Dozens Of Lives Could Be Saved And Hundreds Of Accidents Avoided For Just 20p

Sep 30, 2009 – Dozens of lives could be saved and hundreds of accidents avoided in the UK each year for just 20p according to TyreSafe as it launches October’s Tyre Safety Month. Throughout the month hundreds of garages across the country will be encouraging motorists to check the depth of their tyre tread by using a 20p coin, to ensure they stay safe and legal.
“As we move into the wettest months of the year, adequate tyre tread depth is a critical element of road safety,” explains Stuart Jackson, chairman, TyreSafe. “There are still far too many accidents and fatalities occurring every day which could have been avoided if the driver had paid more attention to the condition of their tyres. The ‘lifesaver in your pocket’ campaign gives drivers an incredibly easy and simple way to check their tread depth which will help them stay safe and on the right side of the law.”
During 2008, 34 motorists died on the UK’s roads where an illegal, defective or under-inflated tyre was a contributory factor in the accident. At least 900 other motorists were also injured in accidents where tyre neglect played a part. Independent research commissioned by TyreSafe found that more than half of all drivers could not correctly identify the legal tread depth and a startling one in five drivers had never checked their tread depth. The AA reported that in 2008 nearly one in ten of every breakdown it attends, is for a tyre related call out.
Current UK law states that tyre tread on cars must be at a minimum of 1.6mm across the central three quarters of the tread, around its entire circumference. Drivers found in breach of this law face a fine of up to £2500 and three penalty points for each illegal tyre.
The ‘lifesaver in your pocket’ campaign encourages drivers to insert a 20p coin into the main grooves of the tyre to check the tread depth. If the outer band of the coin is visible when inserted, then the tyre may not have sufficient depth and should be checked by a qualified specialist.
Adequate tread depth is critical to safe motoring. The tread grooves are carefully designed to remove water from the road surface and keep the tyre in contact with the road. If the tread grooves are not deep enough, water cannot be moved resulting in a loss of grip and traction which can lead to longer stopping distances, reduced handling and an increased likelihood of aquaplaning. More than a quarter of drivers surveyed by TyreSafe were unaware that they were more likely to suffer from aquaplaning with low tread and one in five drivers were unaware that they would take longer to stop in the wet or would not be able to go round corners as well.
“The level of ignorance about tread depth is quite worrying,” adds Jackson. “Tyres are the only part of the vehicle in contact with the road surface so it is essential that they are in a condition that allows them to perform properly. If people do not look after them properly, not only do they risk incurring fines and penalty points, but they also greatly increase their likelihood of being involved in a serious accident.”

It is no secret that when you lighten the weight of a car, less energy is used for acceleration and fuel mileage improves. In 125 years of automotive development, engineers and designers have invented countless ways to reduce chassis and body weight while maintaining structural strength. Where steel I-beam or box frames once dominated the industry, tubular space frames or unibodies using steel and aluminum have successfully reduced the chassis weight and are now widely used.
In contrast, the DiMora D-Tek™ System is based upon decades of progress in aerospace design, precision manufacturing, and composite materials development. It is no secret that when you lighten the weight of a car, less energy is used for acceleration and fuel mileage improves. In 125 years of automotive development, engineers and designers have invented countless ways to reduce chassis and body weight while maintaining structural strength. Where steel I-beam or box frames once dominated the industry, tubular space frames or unibodies using steel and aluminum have successfully reduced the chassis weight and are now widely used.
In contrast, the DiMora D-Tek™ System is based upon decades of progress in aerospace design, precision manufacturing, and composite materials development. At its heart is the honeycomb sandwich panel used to reduce aircraft weight while providing superior structural strength and longevity compared with traditional wood, steel, and aluminum construction.
To build a D-Tek™ chassis, honeycomb sandwich panels are produced to precise dimensions, including slots for joining with other panels. Chemical bonding agents are used to seal joints between panels, augmented by quick-fit fasteners as needed to secure fenders, doors, etc. The chassis is built on a flat table without fixtures because of the precision fitting of the lightweight panels and the quick setting of the bonding agents.
The benefits of D-Tek™ chassis construction go far beyond just weight reduction. No special tooling is needed at the factory. The panels cannot be assembled incorrectly. Sound insulation, vibration dampening, fire and smoke suppression, and even electrical wiring can be built into the panels. The panels can perform double-duty as flooring, bulkheads, firewalls, etc., whereas traditional tubular space frames and unibodies do not. The chassis is largely recyclable.
The Natalia SLS 2 is a very large luxury vehicle, over 20 feet long. Yet remarkably, its D-Tek™ chassis weighs only 457 pounds, and can be assembled quickly by factory workers after minimal training.
The D-Tek™ System pioneers a structural manufacturing system applicable to diverse industries. From satellite platforms, to automotive chassis and bodies, to wall and ceiling structures, to countertops, the uses of this technology are unlimited. By providing a standard set of design and manufacturing techniques, D-Tek™ allows designers and engineers in various fields to explore new applications and take advantage of the many benefits of D-Tek™ panels.
DiMora Motorcar is making the D-Tek™ System available on an industry-wide basis. D-Tek™ honeycomb core materials offered currently include aluminum, titanium, thermoplastics and Nomex, while facing options include lava rock materials, carbon fiber, aramids, woven thermoplastics, aluminum, and fiberglass.
